Development of environmentally friendly and sustainable paper labels

Vochezer Druck GmbH, based in Traunreut, Germany, supports the pharmaceutical industry‘s initiative to avoid plastic in the pharmaceutical supply chain and therefore is developing environmentally friendly and sustainable replacement products.

In Q3 2025, in collaboration with a specialized paper manufacturer and processor, a semi-transparent paper label made from FSC-certified pulp was developed and successfully tested. This label will replace the existing plastic label (PE or PP) used for example to seal small folded leaflets or as a tamper-evident seal on folding cartons.

The advantages of paper labels compared with plastic labels are obvious:

  • Sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to the existing plastic label

  • Semi-transparent paper labels made from FSC-certified pulp without perforations, as they are tearable like normal paper

  • Leaflets with label labels or folding cartons with tamper-evident paper labels are becoming monomaterials for optimized paper recycling

  • The backing material is made out of paper, too – this is our contribution to avoiding plastic in the manufacturing and supply chain of pharmaceutical packaging products

  • Thanks to the in-house production at our site in Traunreut, the change from plastic labels to paper labels is cost-neutral for our customers despite the higher material price with paper labels

  • Depending on requirements, different specifications can be realized (temperature resistance down to -80°C, printing of Lumi-Varnish with ACF relevance to increase product safety or clear detection).

The materials and manufacturing processes used have been tested and validated as part of our change control process. The new paper labels made from FSC-certified pulp will be used as a replacement for the plastic labels with the production of all secondary packaging materials at our site in Traunreut from April 1, 2026 on.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Samples will be send out to all of our customers.
